PhD SCHOLARSHIPS AT GDEM-UPM
Our research is currently focused on solving, from a holistic perspective, the power/energy consumption optimization problem in multimedia handheld devices. The reference application consists of a mobile terminal composed of a DVB H receiver, an audio AAC decoder, a video H.264/SVC decoder and a multimedia player. To validate the results, an instrumented platform (i.e., a platform with instrumentation resources to measure and control the power consumption) that includes an open source operating system is being implemented. Two different paths are considered in the research. On one hand, the operating system scheduler is going to be customized to implement several power-aware scheduling algorithms to distribute the power consumption among the applications (video decoder, audio decoder, multimedia player and user interface). On the other hand, the energy consumption of the applications is going to be characterized under different operational conditions. Research on different application control algorithms to trade quality of service for longer autonomy is being conducted. Besides, GDEM research is focused on new multiprocessor architectures for low-power software radio based DVB-H receivers and optimization methodologies for DSP-based video decoders, applied to scalable video decoders. GDEM has been researching for more than 15 years in digital TV and video coding related issues. In the last years, our group has been focused on real time video and audio encoders and decoders using latest generation DSPs. Now, we are working on two lines: scalable video decoding and 3DTV. Also, GDEM is committed to open a new research line in which multicore DSPs are intended to be used. In this line, we are offering a position for CSC granted candidates to develop a Ph.D. at our lab.
